Veklush, veklabelles, chembolyn, lafchez, nyolbam, skuala lumpur, cheverlyn. Lost yet? Don’t fret, we have some solutions for you. Gayspeak, swardspeak or gay lingo in the Philippines is an art on its own and requires not only active listening skills but also a flexible tongue (pun not intended). In this fast-paced world and with the advent of globalization (huh? where did that come from?), one has to always be up-to-date with the current trends not only in fashion, style and sean cody models gadgets, but also with this interesting language.
Swardspeak is a vernacular language derived from Englog and is used by gay Filipinos. The language is constantly changing, with old phrases becoming obsolete and new phrases frequently entering everyday usage, reflecting changes in their culture and also maintaining exclusivity. The dynamic nature of the language refuses to cement itself in single culture and allows for more freedom in expression among its speakers. Words and phrases can be created out of reaction to popular trends and create alternatives to a strictly defined lifestyle.

So you want to learn gayspeak Filipino style eh? Where do you start? Well, you can start practically anywhere. Heck you can even create your own gayspeak amongst your friends and hope against all hope that everyone else catches on. Just make sure to make it as viral (err, say blogging and YouTube) as you can. If you really wanna learn, then you have to start from the basics. Some of these “basic” words are the origins of the “current” words being used. If you learn the basics, then it would be easier for you to understand the evolved by-products of such.
I do not claim full knowledge of this language as, again, it is constantly evolving. (If the video above didn’t have any subtitles, I would have only understood about 75% of it!). How you wish there was a dictionary of sorts for Pinoy Gayspeak, right? Wish granted. Here are some of the resources that helped me learn gayspeak:
- Online forums:
- Blogs:
- Wanda Ilusyonada
- Etchos (by DJ Drake) - My best source as words are arranged according to nouns, pronouns, verbs, etc.
- Tasha’s Shoe Closet
- Book:
- Baklese: Pinoy Pop Queer Dictionary (compiled by Louie Cano)
This book is very useful! And it costs only P95.00 at Powerbooks!
