Miss Universe or Miss Photogenic?

May 24th, 2007

philippines-2.jpg |philippines.jpg

This year’s Miss Universe hopeful from the Philippines is UP Law student Anna Theresa Licaros. She epitomizes beauty and brains – graduating Summa Cum Laude (BA Broadcast Communications) from the country’s premiere university, University of the Philippines.

I hope she brings home the crown. Miss Photogenic just won’t do it for me this time.

Look Ma, Nice Hats!

May 23rd, 2007

They wore these in Cannes…

If I wore a hat like this around the metro, would people laugh at me? Would they look at me condescendingly and judge me? Would they call me a dickhead? Would I attract hot gay men? Would I snag a hot man for a boyfriend? Or would people even know what the hat resembles?

Bakla is Mean: Profile Funnies

May 23rd, 2007

There are a lot of dating/personal websites nowadays. Straight, not-straight, dogs, and a whole bunch of other things that are “able” to date. I must admit though that I have accounts/profiles in some of these websites. I spend my idle time looking at these profiles, not mainly on their pictures or what they can offer, but more on how they describe themselves. Here are a few profile entries My friend Nick and I collected last year.

DISCLAIMER: The items posted in this entry do not reflect the vast majority of people in dating sites nor does it reflect the mastery of the language of the citizens of this wonderful nation.

TV Hottie: Eric Mabius

May 21st, 2007

The first time I saw the actor playing Daniel Meade’s character on Ugly Betty, I had this feeling that I’ve seen him somewhere before. While watching Betty’s very first episode a few months ago, this question bothered me. And so like what any gay guy who’s obsessed with men he can’t have would do, I consulted my best friend – Google. And as always, Google never failed me and gave me the answers I wanted. I have seen Daniel Meade, err, Eric Mabius before. Not only that, I’ve seen him a lot of times before and in cruelint.jpgTV shows I used to love. And like a circle in a spiral or the wheel within the wind all my love stories with men I can’t have, my past relationships with Eric Mabius were fleeting – ending a month or two after I’ve last seen him on TV. This time though, it will be longer since Ugly Betty did very well on their first season. So I guess I’ll be “together” with Eric for a while. :)
Eric Mabius, who recently celebrated his 36th birthday, started his acting career in an art-house movie in 1995. Several movies followed after that, including The Crow, The Crow: Salvation, Cruel Intentions (see screencap)and Resident Evil. He later on ventured into television and appeared on several TV series like Chicago Hope, Popular, Millennium, and The O.C.. He also appeared as a regular cast member of the “not the lesbian version of Queer As Folk” series, The L Word for its first season.

Imeldi-visoric Day!

May 19th, 2007

In the not-so-distant past, it was rumored that whenever this icon wanted to shop, they would have the entire mall closed to the general public so she could shop. To this day, I still wonder if those rumors are true and if she still does her own shopping.

My friends and I got the surprise of our lives as we went to Divisoria to do some shopping. I never expected to see someone of her stature and opulence to shop in a place like Divi! Not only that, she was dressed up like she always does whenever she’s in public – her signature butterfly-sleeved (?) Filipiniana gown, matching shoes, and big hair! I couldn’t believe we had a run-on with no less than former First Lady Imelda Marcos! She was so down-to-earth that she even sat on a plastic chair in the foodcourt! And she was also kind enough to allow people to have photos taken with her, and waited until everyone – who were so starstruck with her including my friends and I – got their chance at a photo op before she resumed her own shopping!Oh I love Imelda Marcos (only for her DTE moments in Deevee and her great sense of fashion and her SHOES!)!

Filipino Solon in Gay Hall of Shame

May 19th, 2007

“Homophobia endangers basic human rights, and we should all be concerned by it. Governments devalue families when they deny any family recognition. They endanger children when they silence any child.”

- Scott Long, LGBT Rights Program – Human Rights Watch

The Human Rights Watch (HRW), an organization dedicated to protecting human rights of people around the world, has recently released their annual Hall of Shame list. hallofshame.jpgThis list marks the commemoration of International Day Against Homophobia.

This year, the HRW lists a Pope, two Presidents, a Deputy Prime Minister, and a Filipino Congressman. Aside from this list, the HRW also pointed areas where advances in human rights for the LGBT community have given reason for hope.

Leaders named to the “Hall of Shame” for their actions in the past year are:

  • US President George W. Bush: for jeopardizing public health.
  • Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: for creating public and private scandals.
  • Roman Giertych, Polish Minister of Education and Deputy Prime Minister: for endangering children.
  • Bienvenido Abante, Member of the Philippine House of Representatives and Chair of the House Committee on Civil, Political and Human Rights: for trying to force his sexual orientation on others.

Click here to view “Hall of Shame” list and here to view news article.

So who is this Filipino Congressman? Bienvenido Abante is the Congressman of the 6th District of Manila, who is seeking reelection in this year’s midterm polls. As of midnight of May 16th, in the AMA Quick Count, the bigot is trailing to congressional neophyte Casimiro Sison. Let’s hope Abante loses! Abante has continuously and adamantly fought for the scrapping of the Anti-Discrimination Bill, which would pave the way for what could possibly be the Philippines’ first law protecting the rights of gay men and women in this so-called “free country.”

Free Madonna Music

May 18th, 2007

madonna.jpg

In what might probably be part of Her Madgesty’s attempt to be like Santa Angelina, Madonna writes a song inspired by Live Earth. Okay, okay, she does this on her own volition and not something out of sheer imitation of Angelina Jolie’s altruistic humanitarian efforts.

After adopting a Malawian child – following in the footsteps of Ms. Jolie, who to this day already has 3 adopted kids (I will be the fourth adoptee for more Papa Pitt incestuous relations) from different countries – Madonna has written a new song inspired by the environment. Beat that Ms. Jolie!

And to make it more humanitarian and really having a cause, MSN has tied up with Her Madgesty and offers FREE downloads of her single:

Inspired by Live Earth, Madonna has written a new song titled “Hey You,” which is available exclusively on MSN, free of charge, for seven days. “Hey You” was produced by Pharrell Williams and Madonna and recorded in London. Madonna will perform “Hey You” as one of the headliners for Live Earth U.K., joining the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Genesis, the Beastie Boys and other performers at Wembley Stadium in London on July 7, as part of the 24-hour, seven-continent Live Earth concert series.

As the exclusive online destination for Live Earth, MSN is pleased to offer this song in conjunction with Madonna and is proud to donate 25 cents for each of the first 1 million downloads to the Alliance for Climate Protection, in support of Live Earth.

Click here to download song. We love freebies (and pirated music? errr…)!

The song ain’t that bad. It’s actually good.  Labo diba? Some of the lyrics are kinda cliche but hey, for someone jaded like me, nothing is cliche!
