Changing Today’s World

May 18th, 2007

In a beauty pageant in my mind, where the obvious winner is I, I who have nothing…

It’s the final question to be answer by three finalists: Myself (Ms. Philippines), an equally beautiful but seemingly stupid Ms. Turks and Caicos, and Ms. Japan.

Host: If you were given the chance to change one thing in today’s world, what would it be and why?

Ms. Turks and Caicos: Uhm… Chenes Chenes, Chenelyn Mercado, Chembolyn grace chuvanestrationess! I thank you!

Bravo!

Ms. Japan: Kochira Kozou Dozou yoroshiku. Mina-san o tamago ga arimasu ka.

Applause

Ms. Philippines (it’s my dream so I should have the best answer. bida sa saya, bida sa sarap): In today’s world of disturbing trends of sexual cleansing in some countries, I would like the governing and implementing principles of the religious laws in Iran looked at. If their religious beliefs prohibit homosexuality, I cannot contest that. What they can do, as punishment for the hot Iranian gay men that they arrest, is to send them over to the Philippines to work as my slaves. That should be punishment enough. That way, everyone’s happy. And World Peace, I thank you!

Taray!

Why I Watch Wowowee

May 16th, 2007

logo-wowowee.jpg

Wowowee is a noontime television variety and game show in the Philippines that awards cash and prizes to contestants playing various games. The show is hosted by Willie Revillame, with co-hosts Janelle Jamer and Mariel Rodriguez. Roxanne Guinoo was formally introduced as an additional co-host on March 17, 2007. Other members of the production include Bentong, the on-camera assistant, Owen Garcia, the floor director, and Anna Santos Feliciano, the show’s choreographer who manages the ASF Dancers. [source: Wikipedia]

Baduy as it may sound, I always find myself glued to the TV set when this noontime show is on. Why? I have the following reasons:

  1. Natural humor brought about by contestants caught in unexpected situations
  2. Cute and hot balikbayans in the audience.
  3. Baduy yet catchy songs by Willie Revillame
  4. Cute and hot balikbayans in the audience.
  5. Interesting mix of different kinds of people ranging from the rich to the poor
  6. Cute and hot balikbayans in the audience.
  7. Occasional guest hosts like Piolo Pascual and John Lloyd Cruz
  8. Cute and hot balikbayans in the audience.
  9. Simple tears of joy from people who see Willie in person for the first time. (This made me realize the simple pleasures I have in life and that I should cherish them. )
  10. Cute and hot balikbayans in the audience.
  11. Funny antics of the production staff
  12. Cute and hot balikbayans in the audience.
  13. Generosity of TFC subscribers
  14. Cute and hot balikbayans in the audience.

Lucky Laptop!

Ultra Nate’s cover of The Pointer Sisters’ 1984 hit Automatic is hawt! As in uber hot I lost sleep watching the video over and over and over…

Oh yeah, we’re supposed to talk about the beat, melody, and other chenelars, but we won’t. Let’s just continue drooling over the hot guy in the video shall we?

[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/Rx_PkUgqnms" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]

Sometimes I wish I were a laptop. I mean, THAT laptop in the video!

Watch the original version complete with The Pointer Sisters’ signature moves after the jump. And yes, there’s also a hot guy in their vid. So which is the better version (and the hotter guy)? » Read more: Lucky Laptop!

Myspace Brings Back Gay/Lesbian Preference

May 15th, 2007

In the past few months, gay news sites and forums have been discussing the issue of Myspace taking out the Gay/Lesbian option in the Sexual Orientation section of its members profiles.  While updating my not-so-updated Myspace page, I noticed that the Gay/Lesbian sexual orientation is back. We’re up and running again! Whoopteedodee! I guess Myspace listened. Else, they’d have millions of members close their accounts.

The more popular social networking site in the Philippines, Friendster doesn’t have a sexual orientation section in the profiles but the “Interested in Dating Men/Relationship Men” option is good enough. That and the relationship status that many people find very interesting: “It’s Complicated!”

Making Friends Understand

May 15th, 2007

It has been a while since I had to go through the motions of explaining my sexuality to anyone and last Sunday was another opportunity for me to do so – to straight friends. My college friends and I had a mini-reunion of sorts. Me in Green, everyone else is straightWe have been friends for nine years and in the first six of those years, they never knew I was gay. I came out to them some three years ago, but I haven’t really told them how it’s like to live as a gay man in this world.

It’s kind of awkward to talk about your sexuality in the midst of straight male and female friends. First, you’ll have to deal with the fact that they have a different view of homosexuality (some of them homophobic to some extent). And second, you’ll have to deal with people in total shock (no matter how they pretend they’re not) that the straight chickboy they once knew turned out to be gay.

So how does one deal with straight friends? How do you make them understand? » Read more: Making Friends Understand

Gay Terms: What They Really Mean

May 13th, 2007

We mentioned earlier in this blog that Pinoy gayspeak is constantly evolving.  And it does so dramatically.  There are many lists containing Filipino swardspeak and they are great resources to learning and understanding the terms that our fabulous friends in the federation use on an everyday basis.

There are, however, hidden meanings beyond these words.  Meanings which can easily escape the intelligent mind of the uneducated.  Some people do, actually, use the terms in their original sense.  But be wary of the people who use gay words in the context and meanings listed below. Some gay terms have hidden meanings that one has to decode like the Da Vinci Code.

People have different reasons why they use these words to mean the way they’re not supposed to.  But then again, we go back to the truth that gayspeak is constantly evolving and ever-changing. Charing.

[This list has been going around emails and internet forums]

Gay Terms and Their Hidden Meanings

Sister — anyone you don’t hate and want around for something

After-hours — where you go when the bars are closed and you still haven’t found someone to sleep with.

Baggage — the excuse people use to punish their current boyfriends for things that their past boyfriends have done to them.

Bicurious — gay

Gay Online Social Networking/Dating Sites [2]

May 11th, 2007

You think you’ve tried them all? Well, think again. We previously posted Gay Online Social Networking/Dating Sites and five is just not enough. Here are five more sites with a little info and very brief reviews.

In this edition, we’re featuring a mix of sites virtually unknown to most Filipinos and sites which have become a gay household buzzword.

1. DestinationMale.com

DestinationMale is a custom designed site, conceived and developed by gay men who share a dream to produce the best possible gay hookup and dating site. Gay men expect much more now. Many have been disillusioned by the promises of the early dating sites to deliver Mr. Right and have turned instead to the options hookup sites offer. They believe there is a growing market for a hybrid site that offers both gay and bisexual men a comfortable place between hooking up for sex and serious dating while at the same time provides them a sense of community and continuity.

In my own experience with this site, finding men is easy. Easy if you’re looking for mere penpals and long distance pseudo-relationships as most of the members are from the other side of the world. Not only that, there are only quite a few members online at any given time. The interface may be quite confusing at times but it has the same “user-friendly” functions that other sites also claim to have.

2. Fabuloush

Fabuloush is a community site especially designed for the gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgenders. Their mission is to strengthen the ties among their members. They have forums, confession box, and matchmaking, which aim to provide the opportunity to keep existing relationships exciting, make and explore new contacts, and for members to express themselves. Members can keep in touch with other members on a more personal level through private messaging and by building barkada lists. The fabmeter gives them the chance to tell another member how fabulous he/she is. Articles and news stories keep the members updated about events, trends and issues.

This Filipino dating/community site has been around since 2005. Perhaps the hottest thing that this site has offered its members was their Userplane-enabled chatroom, more like the one guys4men has – only this one offered not-so-blatant displays of things-down-there. Their profile pages allows users to rate other users – known as the fab meter. Grand meet-ups/eyeballs, parties, awards nights (Grand Fab Awards), Multiply group accounts have also sprung up from this site. It really is one heck of a community and dating site! (Or should I change that to it really was?

3. Dlist

DList’s purpose is to provide gay men with everything they’d get from an online profile site but with better features and more of them. It has many of the features of manhunt.net, nerve.com, friendster.com and myspace.com but we’re worked to make them so much better than those sites.

dlist2.jpg

As well as being a site where gay men can meet other men from around the world, there are regular parties thrown for DListers in New York (and soon they’ll happen around the country). Dlist.com also features DList Radio, DList’s Internet radio program that broadcasts live every Saturday night from New York’s East Village.

Dlist is one of my personal favorites – probably my most favorite. It’s simple and clean interface makes navigating through the site and finding guys easy! There’s a lot of eyecandy here. The bad news for Pinoys here in the Pinas is that there are only a few local members on the site – which makes dating or hooking up close to impossible… unless you’re into long-distance relationships and webcam “hook-ups.” The site caters mostly to New Yorkers but also has members from all over the world.

4. Gaydar

Gaydar is a worldwide, profile-based dating website for gay and bisexual men, women, and couples who are at least 18 years old. Although many of the individual profiles are publicly accessible on the Internet, to gain more functionality and interact with other users, a registration is required and a guest profile must be created.

If you’re looking for Pinoys and AFAMs (A foreigner around Manila) who’re into chat, relationship, dating, hookups, in and around the Metro, then this site definitely is for you. Of course, you can still resort to Guys4Men (hmmm I think you’ve noticed by now that I’m a big fan of G4m) for an even wider coverage. The chat feature of this site is powered by the Java platform. It is nice, but it may also cause your computer to slow down. The only major difference between G4M and this site is (aside from the color palette) it’s degrees or levels of membership. You can be a Guest member with very limited site functions (maximum daily profile views and messages sent, etc.) or if you’re willing to shell out some extra cash or swipe money off your plastic, then you might wanna consider upgrading to premium memberships. But trust me, even just a Guest membership can get you somewhere!

5. Gayromeo

GayRomeo is a worldwide Internet forum, chat and dating community for gay, bisexual and transgender men. The site was established in October 2002 by PlanetRomeo GmbH in Berlin, Germany. According to its own figures, GayRomeo has more than 442,000 registered users worldwide and is the biggest German-speaking chat and dating community for gay, bisexual and transgender men in the web.

Our friends in the southern parts of the country (Cebu, Cagayan De Oro and Davao) comprise most of the local membership of this site. Since it is German-owned, expect to see lots of hot Deutschmen as well. This is also a nice site, but like Gaydar, there are also premium memberships which will give you unlimited access to all the sticks they offer! What I like most about this site is the sound alerts when you receive messages or when one of your favorites has gone online.

Oh and if you thought we’ve featured all of them, you’re wrong! There’s still more to come! :)
