Anti-Filipino Slur on Desperate Housewives?
Viewed 181 times, 1 so far today
Many Filipinos were offended by what seemed like a racial slur uttered by Teri Hatcher’s Desperate Housewives character, Susan Mayer when she went to see a gynecologist. In that particular scene, Susan objected to being checked by the OB-GYN and stated that she “wanted to make sure that those diplomas are not from some med school in the Philippines.”
Whoa! The line connotes negativity and distrust on medical schools here in the Philippines. Is it racial? Is it directed against Filipinos in general? Or is it directed at the medical educational system in the country? Should we react violently right away and call for boycotts of the show?
The slur can obviously be very offensive and the writers obviously may not have done their homework by researching on the quality of education that our medical educational institutions have. Perhaps it was an error in judgment on the writer’s part for directly relating the numbers of Filipino medical practitioners in the United States to the quality of education offered by Philippine medical institutions?
If you’ve been following the show since its first season, you would know that remarks like these are not uncommon in Wisteria Lane. Some get offended, some don’t. It’s actually just another case of different strokes for different folks. However, if you’re not a fan of the show or do not know its nature, then it is possible that you would take offense in the slur. It may be, after all, a biased and baseless statement and really offensive, specially for our Filipino medical practitioners here and abroad.
For us here at Bakla Ako Dot Com, we don’t think that this is something that should become another cause of BOYCOTTS or clamors for banning the show here. What will that do to us? Will it make the show’s writers learn their lesson? Hell no.Â
( Watch the video here: MindyTV.)
Over at the Desperate Housewives message boards, there is an ongoing exchange of comments and opinions whether the line was anti-racial and whether it’s something that we should all be flippant about it. (Thread 1, Thread 2)
Here are some interesting and contradicting views about the episode (taken from the message boards):
From filipinoIMG
I was shocked and deeply insulted when I heard about that comment from my friends. Thinking ” Is this how the whole USA thinks of us’? It was just a hurtful comment, plain and simple , made by an ignorant writer for the sake of a story line. That was still totally uncalled for, and that certainly does not make it right.
I dont think it should negate the fact that it was a racist comment since they basically insulted the whole country and not just a profession . I guess the “I have a dream” comment by one great person is still that…. still a dream at this day and age.
One good thing about this country is that you can choose NOT TO WATCH. but again that doesnt negate the fact that there are impressionable minds who may get swayed into thinking that it is acceptable to think of one country as being inferior to another
and that… is the beginning definition of racism. I wonder if most people think this is “allright” . That it really is “just a show”
This country has given me the opportunity to make sure that my family is well cared for. I am just shocked to think that after all i have accomplished , green card, citizenship the title of doctor , healer, teacher and all. I am still thought of as a second class citizen.
I think what shocks me more is to know that some people think this is actually acceptable
I still think this country is great, I just think it can be greater still if people patronized shows like this less.
From wifeforlife:
It is too bad that a line in a dramedy has been taken so far out of context. Everyone is entitled to their feelings and opinions, but really where is the line drawn?
Every time we turn around someone is offended by something that was said, or shown, or depicted. If the entertainment and television industry listened to every persons issues about anything and everything, honestly there would probably not be any shows to watch at all.
I challenge everyone on this board to please name one American broadcasted show…..that had absolutely not one offensive scene or line. If I had a million dollars I would bet it that you can’t. I guarantee you someone, somewhere was offended by something on it.
Should you let this one pass, like you did for other remarks directed at other races? Or should you boycott the show and go on a rampage about it?
Should you decide on the latter, I suggest you write to the producers of the show. The address is:

I will just say it is ignorant and a desperate attempt to be witty. Writing about it on our blogs though should clarify the issue about our Philippine Med school.

DHW has a long history of poor attempts at coming up with witty lines. And I agree, writing about it should make the rest of the world MORE aware of how great out medical institutions here are.
If not for these medical schools in the Philippines, then the United States and other countries will definitely have a shortage of qualified and experienced medical practitioners.

I don’t take anything coming out of the mouth of a TV character in a comedy show too seriously so, no, I’m not offended.

They’re so damn desperate for some Filipino audience you know what i mean? Truth is, we’re always on top of the list when it comes to who’s who in american workplace because not only of our hard and smart work, heck even their department of education do recognize the fact that our educational sys is far better that some of their schools you know!
Pissed me off! But in fairness, gwapo ang guy! Magpa-pa-papsmear ako sa kanya and am not gonna check his diploma, rather ung inside nya. Di ba??? hehehe

Everybody is focusing on that scene that they’re totally ignoring the ending of the show. The American Doctor that supposedly graduated in Harvard misdiagnosed Susan’s condition. He said menopause but all along she was pregnant. So while Susan is “generalizing” some Philippine Medical School, the Doctor who came from Harvard made a booboo. I mean hellooo, see the irony???
Geez people….

“…tide is tide!”
—AJ, quotable quote! Hehehe. But seriously, I’m not insulted by the remark either. Come on, it’s just a TV show. I don’t watch it but from what I gather, Teri Hatcher’s character is expected to say something dumb like that. So, I think we don’t have to take it that seriously. But unfortunately, again, an issue has been blown out of proportion. Way, way out of proportion as it is again made into another crusade. Well, yeah, people can do whatever they want, boycott the show or something. But it’s already tiring that with every remark that has become offensive to us, we’d cry afoul, claiming victimization. For me, we can just do some other things that could enrich our lives, and not complain about some scriptwriter who didn’t do his homework and ended up being politically incorrect in writing his scripts.

Anna Dizon is Anna Dizon!
I watch the show and a big fan of it. It is a comedy show and not a rallypoint for political correctness. All the characters in the show are expected, at one point or another, to say something like that – including Teri Hatcher’s.
People should know that a comedy show is a comedy show.

What could I say, Well It’s just another way American exercising their so called FREEDOM OF SPEECH, I think it’s too out of context and it’s too general to say quote “FROM SOME MEDS SCHOOL IN THE PHILIPPINES”. The writer is so immature and insensitive that these type of derogatory statement degrades the integrity of Filipino doctors. They should do something about this..

we complained because we are Filipino Doctors in the U.S. who were offended. It questioned our credibility and pride. If the producers/writers of the show did think it was referring to the NURSING exam fiasco last year then they are mistaken. Not Doctors. Hence the need to Correct it, lest we further propagate it (not based on facts or even fiction). I am happy with the ABC apology. Thats it. No further. Other issues and racial slurs regarding the Philippines…might have some historical context…But MD is a noble profession, for it to be tainted by careless remarks..needs to be challenged and corrected. I am for free speech…but this was clearly a mistake on the writer. Now if you guys think that the petition was wrong. Then you do not understand us. If its regarding what was requested afterwards ex Donation…then i agree with you that it sounds too much. I praise all the Doctors who supported us. Also the non-doctors who helped. But let us keep it regarding Filipino MD and their schools. The rest(non-MD – who are opposed to the petition) cannot understand us anyway, so whats the use convincing them.

i’m not gonna boycott the show because first and foremost i love the show.
but i agree with you when you said that the writers didn’t do their research well..
or maybe they’ve been insensitive to the issue that that line could enrage a lot of criticism.
i don’t like what they did.
and i hope that this major slur on the show could reach the ppl above the network.
