Bakla Ako, May Reklamo?

Budding Filipino Actor Kris Martinez admitted in an interview with PEP that he is open to having a relationship with the same sex. Kris started his career in show business when he became the first runner-up in Close Up to Fame in 2005. He also starred in Twilight Dancers, a film about macho dancers, in 2006. His biggest project so far, we assume, would be this movie with Cristine Reyes and Andrew Schwimmer, Green Paradise, set for release anytime soon.

In a recent interview, this hot actor revealed that he is not closing his doors on gay relationships. It has been rumored that he has a gay sponsor in the US, who sends him money on a regular basis. He denied this but said that there is a gay man from the US who sends him stuff but not money. When asked if it is possible or impossible for someone like him to be involved in a relationship with a gay man, he replied:

“Siguro, depende sa sitwasyon, depende sa tao, depende kung gaano na kami katagal magkakilala. So, kung mas kilala ko na siya as a person talaga, so why not? Bakit hindi?” [Maybe. It depends on the situation, the person, and how long we've known each other. So if I already know him better, as a person, then why not?]

 When further asked if he has not closed his doors to the possibility of having a relationship with a gay man, he said that he isn’t closing his doors. He added that perhaps, everyone of us fall for those who are nice and kind to us, those who show us that they are real and sincere.

“Hindi lang siguro sa girls o sa gays o sa lesbians o kahit ano pa ‘yan. Dun ako nagbe-base, hindi sa personality o dahil sa tao, kundi sa kung ano ‘yung pinapakita mo.” [Probably not only to girls, gays [sic], or lesbians, or whatever they are. I don’t base it on their personality or themselves, but on what they show me.]

I guess they failed to ask him the more obvious question, if he’s gay. I also think that the context of the word “gay” was limited only to the Madonna-whore culture stereotype wherein a gay man “sponsors” a straight boy, with the former providing financial assistance (and inevitably, emotional attachment or love), and the latter providing sexual favors and companionship (and possibly, love) in return. It is a given that these kinds of arrangements exist in the local entertainment industry, but that doesn’t mean that we should all just limit our definitions of one powerful word to just that.

I guess I’m just disappointed with the fact that they failed to ask him point-blank if he was gay, bisexual or trysexual (try anything once). That’s all I need. No sugar-coating needed please. But then again on hindsight, I do realize that we cannot limit our sexual orientation and preferences to mere labels.

So Kris Martinez is open to having a gay relationship. Not so much of a big deal, but we’re happy for him. Uhm, K.
