Bakla Ako, May Reklamo?

While recording the Fabcast Episode last week, a heavy and heated discussion on online chat transpired. There were differing opinions on whether chatting is bad or good. For some, they see chatting as a venue to find people to hook up with. For others, it all depends on the intention of the person. I think we all agreed to disagree on our views on chatting so I will not discuss the ethics of chat because one, I do not have the moral ascendancy to discuss it, and two, I believe in the cliche that to each his own.

What I will discuss though is the various avenues, software, sites and programs where people can find whatever they want - one night stands, a quickie, webcam jerk-off, phone sex, sex eyeballs, coffee dates, relationships (good luck!), business arrangements, and a million other things.

So without further ado, here are some of the more common Chat rooms where people can engage in Free Gay Chat. I took the liberty of trying all these (as I have before, and for some sites still am logged on to) so I could tell you what the experience is like. I’m speaking from experience so please reserve judgment for the second coming (if you believe in one). Chenesitas!

mIRC
If your online life began a decade or so ago, I’m sure you’re quite familiar with this one. Here are the boring details of what mIRC is:

mIRC is a shareware IRC Chat client for Windows. It is developed and copyrighted by Khaled Mardam-Bey. For those of you new to the Internet, IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. The IRC network is a virtual meeting place where people from all over the world can meet and talk (well, type). On IRC you meet others on “channels” (rooms, virtual places, usually with a certain topic of conversation) to talk in groups, or privately.

With that out of the way, let’s discuss the things you will find mIRC useful for. In the early days of the Internet here in the country, mIRC was one of THE hottest sites to login to for chatting (the other was ICQ). There were rooms like #ateneo, #manila, #davao, #dlsu, #chataddicts, #newbies, and a gazillion others. Then of course, there was #gaymanila, #gay, #gaydavao, #gaycebu, #discreetsex, #discreetmen and many others. Over the years, and with the dawn of a new(er) gay generation, the introduction of new labels, and the crackdown of TV networks (in hopes of winning awards) on gay chat, some of these rooms have taken the backseat. However, the stronger rooms have stayed and now co-exist peacefully with the newer rooms.

In the early days, hooking up using the main room was frowned upon by many. The main chat room was busy with discussions on various topics ranging from politics, money, television to sex. Arrangements for sex eyeballs (SEBs) were done using private queries (aka DCC Chat) or PMs. Nowadays, if you visit #bi-manila and #salsalan, what you will see is a non-stop crawling of advertisements of all kinds. There are advertisements selling porn DVDs and VCDs, bahay-kubos (okay, I’m kidding), apartment/flat-sharing, and of course, sex:

mIRC has definitely changed a lot! People have become more open about hooking up. If you’re looking for a quick fuck without having to divulge too much information about yourself (or if you wanna blatantly lie about your stats), then this is for you. To get access to mIRC, all you need is a downloaded software of mIRC through their website. If you’re in an Internet Cafe, chances are they already have that installed on their computers. guys4men XXX Chat

Guys4Men has two different kinds of Chat systems. One is the less-popular G-Rated Java Chat and the other is the cult hit among many Filipino gay men: XXX Webcam Chat.

guys4men chat is based on Internet Relay Chat (IRC), and there are free IRC clients available for pretty much any computer. check out mIRC which is one of the most popular ones on the windows platform.

Chatting on the G-rated Version is just like chatting on mIRC, only with less adverts and less people.To connect using your own chat software, use the following settings:

Guys4Men XXX Webcam Chat is hot! Although it is available to all members from around the world, the rooms are pretty much dominated by hot Filipino gay chatters. There are of course the token Caucasians who pop in and out of the rooms (called Lobby 1, Lobby 2, Lobby 3 and so on depending on the number of chatters online, and the user-created rooms like Jakulan Galore, STr8Trippers, etc).

Userplane’s chat solution is a feature-rich, multilingual Flash app that enables real-time text messaging and voice/video communication. It allows community, dating, corporate and collaborative websites to rapidly deploy centrally-hosted chat rooms.

Some of the users logged on have webcams which you can view at the click of a button, some of them have audio enabled (you can hear them talk or moan) and if you have a cam, microphone and speakers (or a headset) you can interact with them in every way you want to.

This chat system is hosted by a third-party provider known as Userplane. Userplane also provides chat systems to other sites like Downelink (see below) and the now-defunct Fabuloush.com.

CC from Corporate Closet has this to say (and it’s the best description of the whole experience) about the g4m XXX Webcam Chat:

Downelink Chat
Downelink Chat is pretty much similar as guys4men XXX webcam chat since it also employs the third-party provider Userplane for their chat system. The only difference is that there are less people logged on to the site at any given time (actually even if you combine the number of people logged on for the whole 24 hours and compare it with the number of people logged on to g4m xxx chat on any given time, there will still be more chatters on g4m). Another thing that makes Downelink chat different from guys4men is that the chatters here are more subdued and a wee bit conservative. You’re lucky if you see someone jacking off on cam here.

Gay.com Chat
Here is another gay chat system that many people like. if you’re an afam-hunter aka potato queen, then this site is definitely for you. I am not saying that only potato queens log on to this site and I’m not saying that everyone who logs on to this site is an afam-hunter. Since Gay.com is more prolific in other countries, you would expect foreigners who are rice queens (into Asians) or foreigners who are visiting the country, to sprawl the Manila room.

Gay.com chat uses Java and can be accessed via your web browser or an external software which you can download for free (try Gaysenger). The chat room is normally quiet, except for the occasional debates and talks among the regulars (who are mostly Filipinos abroad or locals who have been chatting on Gay.com even before guys4men came into being.)

Gay.com Chat is a service that allows you to send live, real-time messages to other members in a chat room at Gay.com. Gay.com Chat is the world’s largest LGBT online community. Chat rooms are in place for a city near you or around the world, and there are also popular topic rooms, from AA to Webcams.

Chat works with your Gay.com Personals profile, so you can send and receive messages and check out other members’ profiles and photos all in one place.

Gay.com Messenger and Gay.com Chat enables you to chat in private with other members. You can send live, one-on-one messages to your friends — and potential friends — when you’re both online at Gay.com. Just like chat, Messenger works with your Gay.com Personals profile, so you can send and receive messages and check out other members’ photos all in one window.

Yahoo! Chat
Old Skool but still fun! This is the best way to describe this chat system. Using your Yahoo! Messenger (or going directly to chat.yahoo.com), you can chat with other gay Men and women online. I remember some 5 years or so ago when many Filipino gay men were hooked on Yahoo! Chat. That was before Yahoo! shut down all user-created rooms on their chat system. The functionalities that we see in userplane and other chat systems nowadays can also be found on Yahoo! Chat. The only difference is that you wouldn’t be able to view a person’s camera unless they allow you to. Another downside to this chat system is that even if they let you go through a verification page with a Captcha, spammers and spambots still go through and you will receive numerous messages from spambots.

To access Yahoo! Gay chat using your Yahoo! Messenger, simply click on Messenger->Yahoo Chat!->Join a Room. A window will pop-up and will prompt you to select the room you are interested in joining. Click on Cultures % Community, then Groups, then Lesbians, Gays, and Bisexuals. Then select a room from the list.

These are just some of the gay chatrooms you can find online. And if you ask us to rate which one is the best and which ones we recommend, we would say, hands-down: Guys4Men Webcam chat! This is just a guide and a review of the different gay chat systems that exist in the online world today. Chat all you want and do whatever you want, but always remember to KEEP IT SAFE ALL THE TIME!
