It’s almost February! And unlike last year and the years prior, I have something to look forward to! I have never spent Valentine’s Day with a special someone, nor at the very least spent the day of love in someone’s arms (that should be good enough, right?). And even if I’m gonna be spending the day of love this year by lonesome and loveless self, I’m not gonna be nega about it. At least I have something to look forward to.
I’m talking about Daybreak, a story about the dynamics of two men over the course of a day deciding whether to leave their partners and be together. Starring Coco Martin and Paolo Rivero and directed by the talented Adolf Alix Jr., Daybreak (from Bicycle Pictures) is a movie that many of us, gay men and straight-folk alike, will surely learn a lot from. Watch the trailer after the jump.
Synopsis (source)
“DAYBREAK” happens entirely in one place: a rest house in Taal, Batangas and only with two characters. In a single narrative time, intending by way of voyeurism, we discover what happens to two men spending one night contemplating whether to break up or continue their relationship. William and JP allow us to know their biggest lies and the biggest truths… two people loving each other, clinging to each other, betraying each other — trying the fragility of their feelings in only one night.
Memories and dreams, truths and lies, fears and desires, betrayal and honesty, love and hate are all closely entwined in this night.
Behind the veil of words, they are drawn to each other but will the light of the sunrise bring this intimacy to an end?
Reasons why I’m looking forward to watching this film?
….
….
Reasons why I’m looking forward to watching this film?
First, it’s directed by Adolf Alix Jr., whom I had the chance to hang out with and make small chika with at the press screening in
Batanes Boracay of his film Batanes (starring Iza Calzado, Ken Chu, hottie Joem Bascon, Mike Tan, and another hottie, Coco Martin) last year.
This guy is brilliant! He is also down-to-earth, even if he already has written and directed films that Filipinos worldwide can be proud of. There’s Batanes, Nars, Tambolista, Kadin, and of course, Donsol — which was the country’s officialrepresentative to the Foreign Language Film category of the Oscars.
Adolf Alix and Iza Calzado (at The Tides, Boracay) in a podcast interview with bloggers
Second, it’s one of the few films (now growing to many) that have braved all odds and decided to delve on subject matter that is quite frowned upon here in this predominantly Christian nation. The story may be familiar to some gay men, but this one seems like it will disprove misconceptions that the many straight folk out there have about gay relationships. It’s more than just carnal pleasures that we’re after, you see. Judging from the trailer, it seems like this movie will show us (like Batanes did) that love indeed knows no borders.

Third, Coco Martin. Coco Martin is Coco Martin, just like Anna Dizon is Anna Dizon! Need I say more?

True! He is so sarap to the bones! Coco Martin, I Love! As in super Sarap! He’s like everywhere and in every gay-themed movie! In person naman, his face is smaller than it looks onscreen. and he’s very delicate. Parang angsarap ibalibag. Charot!

The only gay flick I really appreciated is the legendary Maximo Oliveros. Yung isa pang movie na napanood ko, Bathtub/house ata ang title… I dunno. Disturbing.
Haven’t tried Brokeback Mountain, though but in the likes of Ang Lee… syet!
And oh, halimaw talaga si Adolf Alix. (bow). Kahit trailer pa lang, maganda na. Too bad, hanggang trailer lang ang napapanood ko and I didn’t manage to at least buy a ticket for Donsol or Batanes. SO yeah. Bahay Ni LOla ang huling movie na napanood ko in a movie theater.

Brokeback Mountain is a tearjerker, specially if you watch it by your lonesome self. Lol. Ive seen it twice, by myself.
And yes, sobrang galing talaga ni Adolf no? Yung Batanes was good. I saw like the first 3/4 of Kadin and it was very interesting. Hmmm that got me thinking…. last movie na napanood ko in a movie house? Teka… tagal na nun!

my number one reason to watch it is paolo rivero. that guy has been, for nearly a decade now, oozing hotness in the movies with no sign of stopping.

i watched the movie last feb20 at robinson’s indie sine. may mga part na nakakaiyak, simple, malakas ang tama, walang halong exaherasyon, at masasabi kong sumasalamin sya sa isang tunay na pangyayari. bilib ako sa nagsulat at nagdirek at bumuo nito, napakaganda ng pag ganap ni coco martin at paolo rivero. sana magkaroon ng PREQUEL, papaano sila nagkakilala sa unang pagkakataon. sana umabot sa writer….

Aj,
Just wanna tell you that finally, napanood ko na ang Brokeback Mountain. The aftermath? Played the saddest songs on WM11 for five hours while preparing for our seminar. Really. It was like after I finished watching Autumn Fairytale Episode 2 nung nagkahiwalay na sina Johnny at Jenny… tapos the ending… aack. Tearjerking, indeed.

For those who have not seen DAYBREAK yet, it’s moving this March 4-11 at Robinson’s Place Ermita and is simultaneously showing at Robinson’s Place Bacolod.
Thanks!
