By now you all should have seen the video (and its numerous remixes) of the interview answer of Binibining Pilipinas World 2008 Janina San Miguel. Her answer in the Q&A segment of the show has made her an international household name. But what you might have missed out on are the answers of the other candidates in the TAF TEN! Watching the videos of the other contestants answering the judges questions has made me think that these girls may just have proven beauty pageant detractors that these contests are not really all about brains.
We have to understand that these girls, even though they are not as viral as Janina has become, have to be given the limelight too. Because after all, they are also important persons in my life! Thank you!
So here are the transcripts and the videos of the answers of some of the finalists:
| #12 Jaysel Arrozal
US Ambassador to the Philippines Christie Kenny: Hi, Good Evening, Sel. Who among the women leaders of the world would you like to meet and why? Contestant: She is the present president op the PILIPINS, but I TINK DAT I will made it, if I were President op the PILIPINS because I have da heart for all the PILIPINOS and right now I’m SK Chairwoman, I’m starting to, I’m starting to serve the public. I’m starting to serb the people and started PORM the YUT. And I TINK, years from now, I can make it to be the president op the PILIPINS, because right now, at the age of 17-years old, I SERB many people, especially the YUT. Thank you. |
| baklang AJ: WTF! How in devil’s hell do we expect her to represent the country if she doesn’t even know how to pronounce the name of her country correctly! And by golly! The question was who you wanted to MEET and not BEAT! Oh and yeah, what’s up with being 17-years old? Good thing you answered ahead of Janina or people would have accused you of copying an answer. Uhm, now we think Janina got the idea of 17-years old from you! |
next!
| #8 Danielle Kirsten Castano (First Runner-Up)
Paolo: Dani, how did you feel a while ago when you were being adorned with all those special awards? Contestant: I felt overwarm… warming. I felt really happy, because I was given a lot of awards. I’m very thankful for all the sponsors that gave me the awards. Thank you very much. |
| baklang AJ: Ah, it must have been really warm when you’re surrounded by sponsors, no? |
…
… next!
| #3 Toni Alyessa Hipolito
Paolo: What did you feel earlier when your name was announced earlier by Ms. Charlene? Contestant: Of course I’m super overwhelm. I’m almost crying coz I didn’t expect this. So I’m very much thankful to the judges who make me in the cut. Thank you. |
| baklang AJ: Ate, past tense po! Overwhelmed! Uhm, judges who MAKE YOU in the CUT? Ano te? |
next!
| #2 Patricia Fernandez (Binibining Pilipinas International 2008)
Judge: Patricia, Good Evening. Contestant: Good Evening Sir. Judge: Which person do you admire the most and why? Contestant: Personally, I admire Mother THeresa. Because (pause) she actually does good things, because she loves God. (pauses) She has the passion for doing it. What is important in life is one’s passion. So she does not, she does not want any other thing except serve her passion. And I believe, all of us SHOULD DO HER. Do. Should do the same. Thank you. |
And parang awa mo na, deadsungelles na yung matanda (in case you didn’t know), past tense na po! Uhm, ang sama mo naman, you want us to DO HER and DO THE SAME pa! |
Oh my god!
…
…
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Brains? Well… Good luck with that.

10% lang and question and answer portion.
Bakit 10%?
According to Ms. Valerie Tapalla (WCT ACADEME of Speech and Personality), it’s how you get along with their culture, foreigners don’t care about your GRAMMAR.
Cna uyo slitl erad tihs emssage? Just like in reality, even though things are not in order, even if everything looks so wrong, deep within us, we do understand.
“my family’s role for me is so important… my family is the most important persons in my life. Thank you.” -Janina San Miguel.

We know that the contest was a beauty pageant and we know that the question and answer portion only accounts for 10% of the total score. It wouldn’t be a beauty pageant if it was not mostly about beauty. Oo nakapunta na ako sa ibang bansa and I agree with you that not everyone has perfect grammar and not everyone speaks good English.
While it’s true that other people from English-speaking countries do not care about another’s grammar, it is also true that whenever one speaks another’s language, s/he has to exert a little effort so that she could be understood.
Am I proud that even if I finished Speech Communication from the University of the Philippines I ended up in a call center? Hell yes, I am! I started out as an agent taking in calls from American customers. Yes, most of them did not really care about my grammar, but they were impressed with my communication skills. And look where I am now. I don’t normally brag about it but I earn a lot of money. I have been promoted several times and that is not an easy feat.
I think the same thing will apply to Janina, whom I assume you are defending. Even if she doesn’t speak English very well, she still needs to hone her communication skills. And from what I’ve seen and read on her interviews across the tri-media (print, radio, television), she does need to learn a lot more. Six or seven months is not enough, my dear.
And I resent it that you presume that working for a call center is a LANG. It is not. I will not go on to explain why it is not an easy job because I assume you are smart enough to know that it really ain’t that easy. Or if you really want to, there’s always Wikipedia.
Janina says that she decided to take Mass Comm as her degree program in college because she knows her weaknesses. But dear, if she knew about her weaknesses, why didn’t she start learning in grade school or high school? I don’t know about you but as far as I know, when people enroll in university, they usually take a field that they know they are good at.
And your sentence with the letters not arranged in their correct order? Yes I know about that. Cambridge University did a research on that and their findings showed that it does not really matter what the arrangements of the letters are, people will still be able to comprehend what they’re reading – as long as the first and last letters of every word are in the right places.
And yes, your comment has been approved for posting. But that does not mean I believe in it.
Thank you.

Oh the humanity of it all.
From all these, I could say the format or how we conduct beauty pageants has to be changed. It’s time to bring it into the 21st century.

Baka di matanggap sa Call Center kaya bitter…
As far as people not caring about grammar, people do get offended when their beloved language is butchered by those not paying attention to the language’s proper grammar use. It’s about respecting the other language, not just proper grammar usage.

How old are these women? Shouldn’t the pageant -powers that be- start picking candidates that are a little “older” thereby being more seasoned of an individual to answer difficult questions under pressure.
The new Miss U.S.A 2008, is 26 years old. Everyone watching that pageant knew she was something special. She stood out among the rest.
Yes, it is our 6th winner who is African-American…the darker the berry the sweeter the juice.
You folks need to think about that one…
