Binibining Pilipinas World 2008 Janina San Miguel’s Answer: The Q&A Transcript
I’m sure many of you have seen clips of this on YouTube or watched the coronation night of Binibing Pilipinas 2008 on television. And I’m sure that many of you fell off your seats either in laughter, disappointment, frustration, or a combination of the three.
Earlier, I shared my two cents’ worth on what’s wrong with Binibini so I will no longer bore you with rants about the whole joke that the pageant has become. Instead, I’ll share with you the transcript of the answer of contestant number 15, Janina San Miguel, to judge Vivian Tan’s question in the Top Ten interview portion.
Janina eventually went home with the Binibining Pilipinas World 2008 title and will represent the country in the Miss World pageants sometime in the last quarter of this year. The challenge now is for the Binibining Pilipinas Charities to coach her on her language skills. They have at least six months to do that.

Paolo Bediones: So you won two of the major awards, Best in Long Gown, Best in Swimsuit. Do you feel any pressure right now? Contestant: No, I do not feel any pressure right now. Vivian Tan: What role did your family play with you as a candidate to Binibining Pilipinas? Contestant: Well, my family’s role for me is so important. Because der was d… deyr… dey was the one… who’s very… haha… Oh, I’m so sorry. Uhm My pamily… my family, oh my god. Paolo Bediones (off-mike): Pwede mag-Tagalog. Sige lang, sige lang. Contestant: Ok. I’m so sorry. Paolo Bediones (off-mike): Okay lang yan. Contestant: I’m so sorry…I… I told you that I’m so confident. Eto, uhm, wait. Hahahaha. Uhm… Sorry guys… because this was really my first pageant ever. Because I’m only 17-years old! And ahahaa… I.. I did not expect that I came from, I came from one of TAF Ten… Mhmm… Sooo…. But I said DUT my family is the most important persons in my life. Thank you. |
I may not be an expert in the language, but I’d definitely offer my services to them for free: Active Listening, Listening Comprehension, Basic Grammar, Thought Organization, Pronunciation, and Effective Communication. I’m sure that if ever she gets in (hoping that Internet voting will still be part of this year’s Miss World), she would need these skills.
That, or we can just send Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago as her interpreter!

and yes, i hated that mother theresa (sabi niya THeresa, diba Teresa lang pag pronounce non?) answer. sobrang kaplastikan! hindi smart yung answer. PLASTIK! PLASTIK!

if i may add - a typical call center newbie can learn the english accent and diction in just two weeks. sentence construction - that takes a lot of time i guess. she got time on her hands to learn and be ready for her big event.

Anybody unfamiliar with the Filipino people will see that on YouTube and think Filipinos don’t know how to speak English!
I don’t know who is worse, her or last year’s Miss Teen South Carolina and her geography answer.

Hindi kita sinisisi sa nangyari sa iyo noong Sabado ng gabi, hindi mo wika ang Ingles. Mas nakakahiya kung hindi ka marunong ng wikang Filipino, o ng kahit anong wika sa Filipinas. Kaso, pinilit mo kasi.

from a businessman’s point of view: don’t you think it would be less costly to put her through English training—a lot of pageant fanatics will offer their services for free than to send off an interpreter to accompany her during the pageant? after all, this would still be an investment to winning the crown (which, i’d say, does not really hold any monetary value but is still worth vying for) and the return of investment (i.e. the elusive miss world crown) is bleak either way at this point. i’m sure she’ll be able to put what she learned through training to her advantage at some point in life, so rather than having to spend twice as much for transportation and accommodation expenses, bpci should put her through an intensive english training crash course, while at the same time get her involved in a lot of charity work and give her a ton of runway training.

I agree. But isn’t the interpreter provided for by the organizers of the pageant? I would like to believe it is so in the spirit of fairness and equality and that nothing gets over-translated or nothing gets lost in transaltion.

Two words: Social Climber. This nincompoop just blew it for all of us. Kung nagsalita man siya sa Filipino/Tagalog malamang di niya rin alam sasabihin niya. Wala namang utak talaga yung babae eh. Ganda lang talaga panlaban niya. Kaya naman tayo natawa lahat di dahil sa kabobohan niya sa English, undi dahil sa kabobohan niya in general. Her answer just hid the fact that she really dont know what to say! Its sad but its true. Gon are the days of Charlene Gonzales, Nina Ricci Alagao, Miriam Quiambao na talaga naman may utak at may tunay na matalino. Hay.

She did not address the question correctly! Given the fact that she had issues with speaking English, comprehension of a simple question is still important. Kung may interpreter sana or kung pinatranslate niya kay Paolo yung sagot eh di hindi siya mapapahiya!

Oo nga. Janina babes, magdala ka ng interpreter… bongga ka… you’ll be the first Filipina candidate to bring an interpreter. Then choose an interpreter na bonga din. I’m sure magkakandarapa sila na mag-volunteer kc may international publicity yan. Payag kaya si Pres. GMA (I’m sorry…) o si Jun Lozada. Run-away winner might be Mirriam Defensor Santiago. Bongga!

Please don’t blame her age, I’m only 16 and perfectly capable of speaking good English. I am also taking up AB Communication at the Ateneo, and I’m really disappointed that she gave our course a bad image.
And another thing that’s disappointing is the fact that Chris Tiu (a prominent student and basketball player at school)was one of the judges. Makes me wonder just how much impact he had on choosing the winner…

We’re not blaming her age. We were just poking fun at the idea of Janina blaming her age for whatever mistakes she might have committed during the q&a.
And oh yes! Chris Tiu as a judge is so off. I mean a basketball player-student? I’m sure he’s intelligent or something but judging ebauty pageants is just not his place in this world.

by the tone of her voice and in the general direction that her statement was going, yes. She blamed her malapropism to her age. Her logic was that because (1) she’s only 17 years old and (2) it was her first pageant, she was excused from committing mistakes.
Alex, you have to understand that not all teenagers are as smart as you are or as non-smart as Janina is. Looking at her interviews even after the pageant, it seems as if she really has trouble not only speaking but also UNDERSTANDING the English language. So cool down and cheer up, it’s not your fault she’s not smart!

i’m praying for janina. hindi nya kasalanan na manalo. siguro may nakita ang mga judges sa kanya para manalo. ok naman siguro sya sumagot sa pre-pageant ninerbiyos na lang sya sa mismong pageant. pero kung ganun naman talaga sya hindi naman basehan yon. instead tulungan na lang sya at palakasin pa lalo ang loob nya to win sa ms world.i know ang Binibining Pilipinas Charities ay gumagawa na ng move para maimprove ng husto si janina. Pagbutihan mo Janina at sana kahit makuha ka lang sa mga finalist ok na yon. pero kung yung crown mas maganda para kahit pano hindi ka na nila tatapaktapakan. hayaan mo lang sila masaya sila sa ganun. just pray hard at pagbutihin mo pa ang training.
