July 20th, 2008The Thank You Girls Premieres Soon!
July 20th, 2008I am glad that there are many Filipino independent films that have homosexuality as a running theme. However, I noticed (like many of you have), that many of these films are usually too tragic, too gory, too predictable, and have too many unnecessary nude scenes. Whenever “Gay Indie” is mentioned, people would easily associate it with either scenes of death or scenes of men in various states of undress.
Then comes, The Thank You Girls!
I know I have posted about it previously, but I just couldn’t help posting about it again since the premiere night already has a definite date and that it will be shown really soon! The Thank You Girls will have its premiere night on August 28, 2008 at the UP Cine Adarna (formerly UP Film Center), UP Diliman at 6:30 PM.
The Thank You Girls, written and directed by Charliebebs Gohetia (writer of the hit Daybreak), is about beauconeras (beauty contestant veterans) from Davao City who got tired of losing beauty competitions there. These queens of the backstage decide to travel to Cagayan de Oro City in hopes of conquering the grandest competition of beauty, personality and brains in the province. (Trailer after the jump)
The movie uses Bisaya/Cebuano as its primary language combined with variations of gay lingo! (For those of you who are not aware, gay lingo/swardspeak also differs from one are of the Philippines to another). Of course there are subtitles, but with or without them, this film still promises to be one heck of a laugh trip as it also introduces very catchy and witty lines, in English and in local swardspeak. Take these lines from the trailer as an example: » Read more: The Thank You Girls Premieres Soon!
Foreigners Arrested in Dubai for Alleged Homosexuality
July 18th, 2008At some point in my life, I contemplated on going to either Singapore or Dubai for employment. I never really pursued that because of so many different reasons. The primary reason was that I never really wanted to leave the Philippines and seek employment somewhere else. I mean, sure, you earn a lot of money somewhere else and experience living an independent life in a foreign country, but I wasn’t ready for that. Besides, I knew that I was in a good place  emplyment-wise.
Another reason was that I have read news about how difficult it is to be gay in a place like Dubai. I’ve read some things about the state of homosexuality there, and I kind of hesitated, too. How will I then maintain a gay blog if that was the case right?
I’m sure that there’s more to it than meets the eye. I think one has to experience living there to really feel and know what it’s like to be gay in Dubai. We have some kababayans who are there and I’m just wondering how their lives are.
Anyway, for our kababayans there, and our friends here who have friends in Dubai, let me just share the recent news from Dubai.
Last July 7, Alarabiya.net reported1 that Dubai police launched a morality campaign after a British couple were arrested for having sex on a Dubai Beach. The campaign also resulted in the formation of an undercover unit to “combat homosexual and indecent activity on the emirates’ public beaches.”
An unnamed official at Dubai Police’s Criminal Investigation Department told UAE daily Al-Emarat al-Youm that police officers in civilian clothing are patrolling local beaches after complaints from the public of indecent behavior, especially at night time. He encouraged the public to report any activity they find offensive.
According to Dubai government statistics, out of 2.97 million beach visitors last year, 641 people were caught engaging in indecent acts. There were also seven cases of alcohol consumption, five cases of alcohol possession, and five attempted robberies.
Recently, about several foreign men were detained for allegedly being gay or openly wearing women’s clothing in public2.
Police in the Gulf tourist hub of Dubai say they’ve detained 17 foreign men for allegedly being gay and wearing women’s clothing in malls and other public places.
Police spokesman Zuhair Horoun says the men were either visiting or working in Dubai. He says they were detained Wednesday but would not elaborate.
I may not want to work in Dubai, but I still want to visit it. Heck, it is my dream to stay at the Burj Al-Arab Hotel!
*note: This entry is not meant to scare anyone in Dubai nor is it meant to prevent anyone from going to Dubai.

Project Runway Philippines
July 16th, 2008It’s the season for more fashion as the rainy season ushers in two new fashion reality series on TV!

The much-awaited Project Runway Philippines will start airing on ETC beginning July 30 (10:00 PM). The Philippine franchise of the Bravo Network’s Project Runway (which will be moving to Lifetime Network after the current season) will be the first show of its kind in the Philippines. We hope though that the show will not be a flop, like the not-so-talked-about Philippines’ Next Top Model.

Project Runway Philippines is produced by Unitel Productions and will be airing on ETC Entertainment Central on cable and on SBN 21 on free TV. The show is hosted by Teresa Herrera and will have Jojie Lloren as the mentor. Resident judges will be Apples Aberin-Sadwhani and Rajo Laurel.
(Since there will be another Philippine Fashion Week in October, I guess the top 3 designers will showcase their collections there too.)
So will this show find the country’s next big Filipino fashion designer? I guess we all will find out together!
Bakla is Excited for Wordcamp Philippines 2008
July 15th, 2008WordCamp in the Philippines  the first in Southeast Asia!
And I will be there to be part of an historic moment in Philippine Blogging History! Like many bloggers out there, I want to improve my craft, not only in effective and entertaining story-telling and writing, but also in the little quirks that come with a self-hosted Wordpress blog (you know those techie plugins and php and css chuvervalynationessences? I, kinda. Ergo, WordCamp Philippines 2008).
Another major reason for joining WordCamp Philippines 2008 is the people who worked so hard to make this event possible  the Mindanao Bloggers! I am a proud Davaoeño and I’m even more proud that this event is being organized by my brothers and sisters from Mindanao!
WordCamp is the premier event for WordPress users and developers. WordPress is arguably the #1 blogging platform in the world today. Apart from the fact that it is feature-packed, highly customizable and flexible, WordPress is open source, and therefore has a large community dedicated to advancing its development. And so, WordCamp is the best venue for WP enthusiasts to come together and get updated on the latest.
One of the objectives of WordCamp Philippines is to encourage more developers to use and deploy WordPress, not only as a blogging engine but also as a full-featured content management system for Web sites. Another is to increase the number of WordPress users and developers in the country. By developers, we mean programmers of WordPress plugins and designers of themes & templates.
