Math Problem: Bob the Builder

Posted by: AJ In: Are You "A" Gay?| From Bakla| Singit lang ()

Bakla will be away for the weekend (to go on a hiking Trip to Mt. Daguldul, courtesy of Columbia Sportswear) and in our tradition of short blog breaks, I’m leaving you all with another Math Problem!

Open This: Bob the Builder Math Problem

blocks.jpg

When you open the spreadsheet file, it will prompt you for a password.  The password is the answer to the math problem below. After solving the puzzle, enter the password, add your name to the list, and send it to your friends (or post it on your blog)! Have fun!

Bob the Builder  goes to work very early but he encountered a problem.

He forgot the five digit access code to his high-tech workshop.  However, he remembered the five clues to get the right five digit access code.

Hereunder are the clues:

 1.  The fifth number plus the third number of the access code equals fourteen.

2.  The fourth number is one more than the second number.

3.  The first number is one less than twice the second number.

4.  The second plus the third number equals ten.

5.  The total of all the five numbers is thirty.

step 1: since the code could not have repeating numbers, equate them muna to 30 using clue#5

n+(n+1)+(n+2)+(n+3)+(n+4)=30
5n=20
n=4

ss:(4,5,6,7,8}

but wait, thats not the code

using deductive reasoning…
clue#1: only 6 and 8 can make 14, so {4,5,7} nalang natitira
clue#2: only 4 and 5 are consecutive dun sa solution set na naiwan, kaya {7} nlang natitira
clue#3: 7 can be the only which is twice the second number minus 1 which is 4
clue#4: only 4 and 6 can make 10

therefore, the code is {7,4,6,5,8} :)

You can also solve this one using substitution method provided that you got the right equation.

I actually used substitution method the first time, and it worked! and you’re right, you just need the right equation to come up with the correct answer.
