The Anti-Discrimination Bill in the Philippines

March 26th, 2008

Last week, I received an inquiry (through my YouTube channel) about gay marriage or any gay news coming from the Philippines. They are civil partners (one is Filipino) who live in Northern Ireland.
Here is their original message:

Hi There AJ

This is Ian and Roel in North East England(We live near Newcastle upon Tyne) I was actually looking through google for info on Gay News in the Philippines, Roel is from Las Pinas and we wanted to get more upto date news on whats going on regarding “Gay Marriage” and all that other legal stuff.. and your website might be just the ticket!

So many sites are either out of date or diffrcult to upload through po-ups or whatever..

Hope that you might be able to help?

Many Thanks

Ian & Roel (Civil Partners)

I was overwhelmed with the message and I’d like to thank Ian and Roel for trusting me to give them information about “Gay Marriage”. Everyday, I read about updates and news about gay marriage, civil unions, and domestic partnership laws being enacted in other parts of the world through various gay news feeds. However, that doesn’t make me an authority on gay marriage. So the views that you will see in the next block quote are mine alone and should not be construed as the view of all gay men in the Philippines.

Gay Web Series: In The Moment

January 24th, 2008

Here’s something that gay men should start following on the web!

IN THE MOMENT is an online web series that follows the lives of a group of gay guys living in the same apartment complex in West Hollywood, California. Like most of us, they’re faced with a huge range of decisions about sex, and the decisions they make impact their lives and the lives of people around them.

Although its target audience is gay men in Los Angeles, I think we could all learn a lot from the series. Personally, I can relate with most, if not all, of the characters in the story. At some point in my life, I have been in the same situation as every single one of the five main players. And yes, I have also met some guys like them and actually have friends who are exactly just like them.

in-the-moment-gay-video-series-adam.jpgThere’s Adam who spends too much time on the Internet. I’m not totally sure what he does online but the first episode gives us clues that it’s mostly on gay dating/hookup sites.

Guys4men, mIRC, Manjam, Outpersonals, Downelink, Connexion, Gay.com, Fridae, Dlist, Gayromeo much?  then Adam is your kind of guy. Whatever he does beyond what we can see so far, is yet to be known.

There’s also Shawn who seems a tad bit coy and is not really that active with his sex life.in the moment gay video series edgar shawn or at least that’s what one of the characters has implied in the first episode. Shawn is worried about another character’s drinking problems. My guess is that he is in love with Edgar or they have a thing which they both couldn’t act upon, yet.

Edgar is the hot Latino of the bunch. He opens the series lying on the grass, completely passed out and couldn’t recall what transpired the night before and how he ended up lying on the grass. He may have a drinking problem, which worries Shawn.

Mike is the “dirty and dirty” guy of the group. And by that we mean, old. in the moment gay video series stephen mikeThe other characters call him names that allude to old age like a senior citizen card and dirty and dirty.  Mike is bothered by his boyfriend’s non-use of condoms during intercourse. (He shows off a little tooshie in Episode 1)

Stephen is Mike’s boyfriend. During their coital scene, we notice that while Mike is getting condom from the night table drawer, he didn’t bother waiting for Mike to open the packet and instead went right in.

Episode 1 leaves us with so many questions and makes us open our eyes to the truths about sex and relationships. The good thing about this series is that viewers can discuss the issues in each episode.

Five young gay guys, living together in an apartment complex where they all face decisions about their sex lives, sounds like the description of a television soap-opera. But it also describes the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s groundbreaking new HIV prevention/education campaign.

IN THE MOMENT (produced by WeHoLife.org) is also about starting an open, honest conversation among gay guys in the Los Angeles area about these types of decisions. We hope you enjoy this first webisode, but we really hope you’ll stick around to comment on what you’ve seen. Enjoy!

We have to admit that information about HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases and infections here in the Philippines is not quite enough yet. I don’t know what the reasons behind this lack of information but what I do know is that we all can start somewhere and we can start from here. The WeHoLife website has a lot of information about HIV and STDs and STIs as well as on drugs.

The fight for the enactment of the Anti-Discrimination bill in both houses of congress is a long one and we do hope all of us join forces in pushing for it to become law. The next elections may still be two years away, but as early as now, I call on everyone to vote for Danton Remoto for Senator (whichever party he may finally decide to run with) in 2010.

Doing Our Part

March 8th, 2007

Got this from the Ang Ladlad Community on Livejournal. Let’s all do our part in advancing the representation of the LGBT community to the Congress.

Not only has the Comelec denied accreditation to Ang Ladlad, it ahs also branded Danton Remoto, who is running for Senate, as a nuisance candidate. This despite the fact that Remoto is ‘a university professor, Fulbright scholar and author of some 20 books…and taught for a year at Rutgers University in New Jersey.’
Apparently Richard Gomez has better credentials.

The Inquirer has an article about it, and I find it funny that the Comelec finds Richard Gomez’ ‘popularity as an actor’ as an indicator of how serious he is to run for the Senate.
