Join The PPCRV MyVote Volunteers for the 2010 Elections!

July 17th, 2009

The 2010 Elections is just right around the corner!  This election may be one of the most, if not the most, controversial elections in the history of the Philippines. Will you remain indifferent and leave it all to blaming the politicians, or will you do your part in making the 2010 Elections clean, honest, accurate, meaningful and peaceful?

If you chose the latter but do not know how you can be of help, then today is your lucky day! If you have not registered yet, or are not sure about your registration status, visit Bakla sa 2010: The Philippine Elections Coverage for more information.

I am personally inviting everyone to join the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting as a volunteer! Simply visit the PPCRV website or the PPCRV MyVote Facebook Page for details.

(The PPCRV, in cooperation with Namfrel and the ABS-CBN News Channel, yesterday held the Talakayan Forum at Plaza Miranda where six possible presidential candidates – former President Joseph Erap Estrada, Senator Loren Legarda, Senator Richard Gordon, Senator Chiz Escudero, Senator Mar Roxas, and Pampanga Governor Ed Panlilio – answered questions from the different marginalized sectors of our society. Watch out for replays on ANC and on GNN.)

A Petition to Replace Janina San Miguel?

March 24th, 2008

It seems like the controversial Binibining Pilipinas World 2008 Janina San Miguel will never hear the end of it. Janina Miller San Miguel, a broadcast communication student at the University of the East, has received countless criticisms because of her answer in the semi-finals interview portion (click here to read full transcript of Janina’s answer and here for the transcript of the answers of the other finalists). She has been called names and even branded as the next Melanie Marquez – the country’s reigning queen of malapropisms. And based on interviews with her after the pageant, it seems like she will not budge. Janina seems like a strong woman and she probably is hell-bent on proving her detractors wrong and prove to the world that she is tough. After all, she is one of the tough ten!

Many Filipinos from all over the world were dismayed with the decision and are blaming the judges and the Binibining Pilipinas Charities for allowing contestants with poor communication skills to enter the contest. Some also blame (though only partly) the country’s educational system for producing students that are very poor in English. Others argue that she is a Filipina and there’s nothing wrong with speaking English with incorrect grammar. Some also suggest that we send an interpreter with her to the Miss World competiton (after all, other countries send interpreters too!).

Over at the Binibining Pilipinas official website, a Press Release automatically pops-up upon entrance, and it says:

Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. would like to congratulate the newly-crowned Binibining Pilipinas International 2008, Patricia Fernandez; Binibining Pilipinas Universe 2008, Jennifer Barrientos; and Binibining Pilipinas World 2008, Janina San Miguel. These three new queens that will represent the country in the respective global competitions are all worthy title holders.

The unanimous and final decision of the 11 distinguished International Board of judges chose them as the winners, during the Grand Coronation Night held at the Araneta Coliseum last March 8. San Miguel won Best in Swimsuit and Best in Long Gown categories.

It seems that the BPCI is upholding the decision of the judges. Call me crazy but I sense a washing of hands is apparent. But that’s just me.

Is David Archuleta Gay?

March 22nd, 2008

After Danny Noriega’s elimination from American Idol Season 7, the gay community may have lost a teeny bit of interest on the show. Who will reprizant yo? David Hernandez, whose image was scandalized because of photos of him working as a stripper for a gay club, was going to be the contest’s remaining gay icon. But sadly, he too was eliminated.

This brings us to the numerous discussions online that America may not be ready yet for a gay American Idol. Or are they really? Many of our gay friends have now turned their attention on this other boy in the contest – David Archuleta.

David Archuleta Gay?

David is the current favorite to win the show, we all know that. And if he does, then many gay men, like I, will be very happy. This 17-yeard old boy has become a favorite because of his great vocal prowess and probably because even if he has had vocal chord paralysis, he still sings that well!

Online discussions and forums have been talking about David not only because of his singing prowess but also because of his perceived sexuality. Many people think that David Archuleta is gay, many don’t. And some people argue that David just appears to be gay because of his youth. We do not know if he’s gay or not, really. And it really does not matter.
