Gay Dating Sites: The List!

July 15th, 2009
Gaydar (website)
Image via Wikipedia

In 2007, I posted entries that listed different gay social networking or gay dating websites (Part 1 here, Part 2 here) that I could recommend for Filipinos here and abroad. When I revisited those posts about three months ago, I noticed that some of the sites are now non-existent or have been sold or have merged with other sites.

It’s now 2009 and boy how things have changed! Some of these sites have added new features or have redesigned the site and have changed platforms. And I think it’s about time I write an updated list.

Guys4men used to be the “it” website but when it merged (aka sold out) with PlanetRomeo, a whole new ballgame has started in Filipino Gay Social Networking and Dating Websites. The response to the merger was not that positive and its members went scrambling online, looking for a new place to meet other men.

The Filipino Gay, a blog that “has the ambitious proposal of providing an avenue for gays to open up themselves to people, explore their inner side, and create an interaction between ourselves,” has posted a paper on Online Gay Social Networking Sites: Effects and Marginalization. The paper “tends to focus on online gay dating sites, the trends, how the users utilize the possibilities of social networking, and present some issues resulting thereon.

The 6-part series is a very good read! Here’s a list of the parts:
Part 0, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, part 6.

Here is my list (in no particular order) of online gay social networking sites for Filipinos (and admirers of Filipino Men):

  1. GayRomeo (also known as PlanetRomeo: the Gay Romeo and Guys4Men merger)
  2. Gaydar (dot UK or dot Net – the same)
  3. Gay.com
  4. Gaylog
  5. PinoyG4M (a Filipino dating website running on a platform similar to Facebook; adapted the nickname G4M of the erstwhile guys4men)
  6. SingleGuysManila (also Filipino-owned; running on the Ning platform)
  7. DowneLink
  8. Manjam
  9. Manhunt (will undergo a system upgrade on July 15)
  10. Connexion
  11. Fridae
  12. DList
  13. DudesNude (similar platform with the old Guys4Men)

These are only the few that I know of (and have profiles with – except DudesNude). I’m such an online whore (but an offline bitch) that I have profiles with most of these sites.  What do I use them for? No, not sex. At least not anymore. Not since 2007. Now, it’s merely all about… social networking! Like seriously!

Guys4Men to Merge with PlanetRomeo

March 1st, 2009

Guys4men is one of the biggest and largest(oh boy do we love big and large things) gay dating sites in the Philippines. And I personally think that it has the best interface among all dating sites that I’m a member of (yes, I’m a slut like that).

PlanetRomeo (also known as GayRomeo) is actually one cool site, which I am a member of too.  If you’re not quite familiar with PlanetRomeo, the guys4men notice says it’s quite similar to guys4men in terms of functionality and vision. Also, PlanetRomeo has more members in Europe. So add Asia + Europe (Guys4men + PlanetRomeo), then you have a Eurasian gay dating site! Charot. The two sites are set to merge on March 18, 2009. According to the merger’s press release, Guys4men user profiles will be moved to the PlanetRomeo web application. What this means for existing Guys4men users is that all their profile contents will be moved to PlanetRomeo, but they will not have to do anything. However, there will be a short time between now and the March 18 merge when Guys4men members will not be able to access the site.

In addition, all Guys4men members will be receiving a PLUS membership (PlanetRomeo’s version of the Supporter Status) for 6 months! Guys4men members with existing SitePoints (I have close to 300 – all referrals!) will have them translated into PlanetRomeo Plus membership in a pro rata allocation.

For those who are NOT interested in joining the merger, all they have to do is delete their guys4men profile before March 18.

Those who opt-out of guys4men before then will not be automatically transferred to Planetromeo, and will miss out on the free Plus membership.

More information can be found on their Press Release Page

Manila High Society and The Gucci Gang Scandal

March 9th, 2008

In the past few days, I have been addicted to reading and re-reading entries and refreshing pages to check for new comments of this certain blog. Oh how we love scandals!

Manila’s so-called high society, the socialites or the elites (whatever you call them), must be up in arms now and on the lookout. I think many of them are monitoring the blog to see if they have been incriminated in the issue. The blog has actually opened up a can of worms. The goal of Aussie Brian Gorrell, the owner of the blog, is to get his money back. As was stated in the blog, DJ Montano, the Filipino ex-boyfriend of a year and a couple of months, owes Gorrell about $70,000. That’s in dollars ha! Gorrell wants Montano to pay up.

And that opened Pandora’s Box. Montano who is allegedly part of a group infamous in local high society circles as The Gucci Gang. The Gucci Gang is now on the hot seat as issue after issue about them have come up. What’s worse is that most of these issues about them came from readers’ comments. And names from the alta-sociedad have been incriminated and more and more names are coming up – mostly from readers. These altas must be pissing in their pants right now. With issues like cocaine use, rich married men who turn out to be gay, social climbing, etc., this blog surely is a hit!

I will not name names here because I am not at liberty to do that (kase naman hindi ako member ng high society no?). If you really want to find out who these people are and what was said about them. I am not confirming or denying any of the facts (kase nga naman hindi nga ako high society! I’m lucky that I’m just an indio) I’m just sharing! It’s like Gossip Girl for real! The blog is so addicting that I have canceled some plans because I couldn’t get away from my computer!

It’s just so amazing that it took a foreigner to expose this”high society” which many locals have put on a pedestal. Let this be a lesson to those who want to social climb their way to Manila’s High Society:

Huwag na mag effort mga ‘te, hindi worth it!

2257 Regulations: The End of Guys4Men?

September 5th, 2007

The US federal government is proposing regulations which may eventually lead to the closing down of several adult social networking sites. They are doing this in their “efforts” to fight child pornography.  Enacted in 1998, Section 2257 or The Child Protection and Obscenity Enforcement Act of 1988 is a federal law designed to fight child pornography.  We are one with the whole world in the fight against child pornography and this seems like a good law to protect our youngsters. This is a good cause right? Right.

The 2257 Regulations were originally designed to require producers of sexually explicit material to acquire proof of age of all their “actors” and likewise keep these on record.  (If you have adult videos like Corbin Fisher and Sean Cody, you would see these notices at the beginning of the clips.) [sample below]

2257bakla.JPG

However, in 2006, it was amended and was expanded to regulate the Internet and the term “secondary producers” was introduced.  Secondary producers are those who publish, reproduce or reissue explicit material, ergo adult social networking site owners and administrators:

A “secondary producer” is defined as any person who produces, assembles, manufactures, publishes, duplicates, reproduces, or reissues a book, magazine, periodical, film, videotape, or other matter intended for commercial distribution that contains a visual depiction of actual sexually explicit conduct.

So how does it affect users and members of adult social networking sites (straight and gay, mind you)? The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force breaks them down into the following: » Read more: 2257 Regulations: The End of Guys4Men?

The Bakla Business Card

August 25th, 2007

Contrary to this one person’s belief (this person has continually and relentlessly accused us of using this blog to hook up with men), we don’t.  And this may come as a shock to that person but Bakla gives out a business card whenever he attends events.  And we’re pretty sure that this person, whose mouth is probably bigger than a venus flytrap’s, if he ever gets hold of our business card will use it as an “evidence” to prove their claim. Oh great!

A business card is obviously used for business. And why do you reckon a blogger has to have a business card? Well for one, you can use it to win prizes in raffles.  It is also a way for people (bloggers, marketing and advertising groups), magazines, media, etc. to get in touch with you should they need to transact business with you.  No hanky panky, of course.

In Bakla’s experience working for different industries (the meedia, the music industry, local theater, FM radio, PR, communications,  glossy magazines, artist management), a business card can take you a long way. » Read more: The Bakla Business Card

Bakla is Mean: Profile Funnies

May 23rd, 2007

There are a lot of dating/personal websites nowadays. Straight, not-straight, dogs, and a whole bunch of other things that are “able” to date. I must admit though that I have accounts/profiles in some of these websites. I spend my idle time looking at these profiles, not mainly on their pictures or what they can offer, but more on how they describe themselves. Here are a few profile entries My friend Nick and I collected last year.

DISCLAIMER: The items posted in this entry do not reflect the vast majority of people in dating sites nor does it reflect the mastery of the language of the citizens of this wonderful nation.

Myspace Brings Back Gay/Lesbian Preference

May 15th, 2007

In the past few months, gay news sites and forums have been discussing the issue of Myspace taking out the Gay/Lesbian option in the Sexual Orientation section of its members profiles.  While updating my not-so-updated Myspace page, I noticed that the Gay/Lesbian sexual orientation is back. We’re up and running again! Whoopteedodee! I guess Myspace listened. Else, they’d have millions of members close their accounts.

The more popular social networking site in the Philippines, Friendster doesn’t have a sexual orientation section in the profiles but the “Interested in Dating Men/Relationship Men” option is good enough. That and the relationship status that many people find very interesting: “It’s Complicated!”

Gay Online Social Networking/Dating Sites [2]

May 11th, 2007

You think you’ve tried them all? Well, think again. We previously posted Gay Online Social Networking/Dating Sites and five is just not enough. Here are five more sites with a little info and very brief reviews.

In this edition, we’re featuring a mix of sites virtually unknown to most Filipinos and sites which have become a gay household buzzword.

1. DestinationMale.com

DestinationMale is a custom designed site, conceived and developed by gay men who share a dream to produce the best possible gay hookup and dating site. Gay men expect much more now. Many have been disillusioned by the promises of the early dating sites to deliver Mr. Right and have turned instead to the options hookup sites offer. They believe there is a growing market for a hybrid site that offers both gay and bisexual men a comfortable place between hooking up for sex and serious dating while at the same time provides them a sense of community and continuity.

In my own experience with this site, finding men is easy. Easy if you’re looking for mere penpals and long distance pseudo-relationships as most of the members are from the other side of the world. Not only that, there are only quite a few members online at any given time. The interface may be quite confusing at times but it has the same “user-friendly” functions that other sites also claim to have.

2. Fabuloush

Fabuloush is a community site especially designed for the gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgenders. Their mission is to strengthen the ties among their members. They have forums, confession box, and matchmaking, which aim to provide the opportunity to keep existing relationships exciting, make and explore new contacts, and for members to express themselves. Members can keep in touch with other members on a more personal level through private messaging and by building barkada lists. The fabmeter gives them the chance to tell another member how fabulous he/she is. Articles and news stories keep the members updated about events, trends and issues.

This Filipino dating/community site has been around since 2005. Perhaps the hottest thing that this site has offered its members was their Userplane-enabled chatroom, more like the one guys4men has – only this one offered not-so-blatant displays of things-down-there. Their profile pages allows users to rate other users – known as the fab meter. Grand meet-ups/eyeballs, parties, awards nights (Grand Fab Awards), Multiply group accounts have also sprung up from this site. It really is one heck of a community and dating site! (Or should I change that to it really was?

3. Dlist

DList’s purpose is to provide gay men with everything they’d get from an online profile site but with better features and more of them. It has many of the features of manhunt.net, nerve.com, friendster.com and myspace.com but we’re worked to make them so much better than those sites.

dlist2.jpg

As well as being a site where gay men can meet other men from around the world, there are regular parties thrown for DListers in New York (and soon they’ll happen around the country). Dlist.com also features DList Radio, DList’s Internet radio program that broadcasts live every Saturday night from New York’s East Village.

Dlist is one of my personal favorites – probably my most favorite. It’s simple and clean interface makes navigating through the site and finding guys easy! There’s a lot of eyecandy here. The bad news for Pinoys here in the Pinas is that there are only a few local members on the site – which makes dating or hooking up close to impossible… unless you’re into long-distance relationships and webcam “hook-ups.” The site caters mostly to New Yorkers but also has members from all over the world.

↨↨↨↨↨↨ ↨↨↨↨↨↨ ↨↨↨↨↨↨
4. Gaydar

Gaydar is a worldwide, profile-based dating website for gay and bisexual men, women, and couples who are at least 18 years old. Although many of the individual profiles are publicly accessible on the Internet, to gain more functionality and interact with other users, a registration is required and a guest profile must be created.

If you’re looking for Pinoys and AFAMs (A foreigner around Manila) who’re into chat, relationship, dating, hookups, in and around the Metro, then this site definitely is for you. Of course, you can still resort to Guys4Men (hmmm I think you’ve noticed by now that I’m a big fan of G4m) for an even wider coverage. The chat feature of this site is powered by the Java platform. It is nice, but it may also cause your computer to slow down. The only major difference between G4M and this site is (aside from the color palette) it’s degrees or levels of membership. You can be a Guest member with very limited site functions (maximum daily profile views and messages sent, etc.) or if you’re willing to shell out some extra cash or swipe money off your plastic, then you might wanna consider upgrading to premium memberships. But trust me, even just a Guest membership can get you somewhere!

5. Gayromeo

GayRomeo is a worldwide Internet forum, chat and dating community for gay, bisexual and transgender men. The site was established in October 2002 by PlanetRomeo GmbH in Berlin, Germany. According to its own figures, GayRomeo has more than 442,000 registered users worldwide and is the biggest German-speaking chat and dating community for gay, bisexual and transgender men in the web.

Our friends in the southern parts of the country (Cebu, Cagayan De Oro and Davao) comprise most of the local membership of this site. Since it is German-owned, expect to see lots of hot Deutschmen as well. This is also a nice site, but like Gaydar, there are also premium memberships which will give you unlimited access to all the sticks they offer! What I like most about this site is the sound alerts when you receive messages or when one of your favorites has gone online.

Oh and if you thought we’ve featured all of them, you’re wrong! There’s still more to come! :)
