Shameless Plug: Vote for Bakla!

July 15th, 2009

Dear friends,

Greetings of peace and love in the time of cholera and swine flu!

There’s this ongoing online popularity contest (which has become quite controversial for the ladies…) for the “Best” Twitter People.  Apparently, someone nominated me and now I’m up to about 70 votes.  I nee d to beat so many people to be the number one! (My twitter username is bakla)

It is in this regard that I implore your good hearts to please support me and help me win this thing!  I understand that it is a very silly endeavor but I really do want to win.  I need more votes (unless you want Tim Yap to win this thing – not that there’s anything wrong with him winning) so I can say that a gay man won Mr. Twitter Philippines!

You can vote for me and some of my friends too (fine!) here.

Love,

bakla
Bakla.
(At sa huli’y isang dumadagundong na CHAROT!)

Earthquake in the Philippines

November 27th, 2007

I just posted a short break notice, but we’re taking a short break from that short break to blog about the earthquake that just happened earlier today. As I was reviewing my last entry, I felt this sudden movement from nowhere. Initially, I did not think of it as an earthquake as I have kind of accustomed myself to sudden movements. I’m quite sensitive when it comes to earthquakes, and that I owe to my younger years.

My mother has Vertigo and she would always ask if there’s an earthquake – even if there isn’t any. That’s how I learned to be ultra-sensitive to movements of the ground. Whenever I feel the ground shaking and my mom’s near me, I’d find a way to distract her just so she won’t notice that it was happening – because if she did, it would scare her a lot and trigger her Vertigo. Whenever there’s an earthquake, the first person I would think of, even now that I’m away from home, is my mother. Heck, even if I’m just a little dizzy, or if my cubicle wall in the office gets tapped or hit by someone, I’d automatically assume it’s an earthquake and ask around if anybody else felt the tremors.

So when I felt the floor and my computer desk here at home moving, my initial reaction was to survey the area around me to confirm if indeed it was an earthquake. Split-seconds later, I wanted to shout and announce that an earthquake was currently taking place, but realized that I lived alone and no one would hear me screaming. Not even my neighbors. And besides, what good will that do?

Since I was in front of my laptop, the first thing (well second after surveying) I could think of doing was announcing it over Twitter. I channeled my scream into an online version and came up with this:

A few more messages came after that and then I headed outsid, to my balcony, to take a photo of the first interesting thing I saw: the building being erected next to mine.

Then it was back to my computer where I started interacting with my Twitter friends to talk about what just happened. And while doing that, I posted my very first entry about the quake on my livejournal (since I just posted a short break entry here).

When the interesting and fun brouhaha over the quake died down on Twitter, I took a photo of Manila Bay, which was visible from my balcony (but not in the photo!):

As per the USGS website, several other earthquakes hit other countries in the region and other parts of the world at around the same time (if not the same hours).

It’s interesting how bloggers and the citizens of the online world can all converge/unite in discussion using one tool in a matter of seconds – without any moderator of sorts. And I agree with Tess, that the best Twit posted about the quake was that of Jeff’s:

Earthquake Philippines November 27

And to answer Noemi’s question, what would I do if it rocked again? Twit or Run? I would say Twit and Run! But since I live on a floor which is situated right smack in the middle of a 34-storey residential building, I would just Twit, get my bato, swallow it and scream Darna!

I think this photo here summarizes this whole blogging and Twitting interest about the earthquake . And yes, it’s Viral too! Other bloggers also wrote about the quake here:

now back to the short break
