That’s So Gay? Knock it Off!

October 16th, 2008

The poster above is part of an advertising campaign that aims to raise awareness about the prevalence and consequences of anti-LGBT bias and behavior in schools in the US.  The campaig, I personally believe, can also help us educate more people here in the Philippines about the mindset on homophobic jokes and slurs like “that’s so gay”.  Most people do not recognize the consequences, but the casual use of this language often carries over into more overt harassment.

Part of this campaign are three videos, two of which topbilled by Hollywood celebrities Wanda Sykes and Hillary Duff. Help spread the word! Go to the Thinkb4youspeak website to learn more about the campaign.

Joel Lamangan’s Walang Kawala (No Way Out)

October 9th, 2008

A fisherman, his sex-starved wife, the fisherman’s lover and then more. Walang Kawala (No Way Out) by acclaimed film director Joel Lamangan, explores the dynamics of a hetero-homo love affair that evolves from innocence to violent complications.

Joel Lamangan’s first indie film is a story about a fisherman named Joaquin (played by Polo Ravales) and his young, impulsive lover, Waldo (played by Joseph Bitangcol).  The typical formula of a gay affair gone bad and mad in local indie films may appear to be the central theme of this film, but the trailer promises more than just that.  Joaquin’s wife, Cynthia (played by newcomer Althea Vega) comes home from her overseas job with open arms and open legs — ready to conceive an offspring — inevatibly forcing Joaquin to confront his sexuality.

Disgusted and hurt over the recent turn of events, Waldo decides to flee and ends up entangled in the gay underworld of Manila. Waldo is caught in a twisted web of events as he gets involved in a dangerous flirtation with a bisexual cop named Rufo (played by Emilio Garcia). Joaquin finds out all about these and more after leaving his wife to search for Waldo. More twists and turns in the storyline lead Joaquin into Rufo’s house where he, like Waldo, eventually becomes prisoner and sex slave to Rufo. Joaquin and Waldo get reunited, but both discover that they are about to be sold to an international sex traffic ring. With the help of Rufo’s battered wife Beng (played by Jean Garcia), the two lovers plot their escape from Rufo’s house.

Will they be able to escape and live a good life together?  Or will this storyline end up tragically like other gay-themed indie films?

Speedo’s Homoerotic Instructional Video

October 7th, 2008

I have always wondered if male swimmers (like Michael Phelps) who wear those tight one-piece, long swimsuits wore something else under.  I got my answer after watching this tutorial on how to wear Speedo’s LZR Racer.

Oh I also got more. Wait till the last minute or so and you’ll know what I mean. Enjoy!

Internet Boyfriend Anyone?

July 28th, 2008

How many of you have had an online relationship that remained just that, online?

I have had a couple (or more, I think) of onlıne boyfriends whom I’ve never met in person. The relationship was, as far as I was concerned, real.  The feelings I had were sincere and I really thought that things would be better and we would finally meet up and take the relationship to where no gay man has boldly gone before, charotz!

Those relationships never really materialızed in the real world and I was left broken and depressed. I have moved on since then and I,m now living a happy life.  Some people would consider an online relationship as nothing but a waste of both your time and energy, but there are some who think that relationships of this kind are actually legitimate and merit acceptance.

And there are those who write songs about their Internet boyfriend (firmly with tongue in cheek) like this cute guy named Comet (Myspace link).  Watch the video and you,ll definitely love him and his song!

The Thank You Girls Premieres Soon!

July 20th, 2008

I am glad that there are many Filipino independent films that have homosexuality as a running theme.  However, I noticed (like many of you have), that many of these films are usually too tragic, too gory, too predictable, and have too many unnecessary nude scenes.  Whenever “Gay Indie” is mentioned, people would easily associate it with either scenes of death or scenes of men in various states of undress.

Then comes, The Thank You Girls!

I know I have posted about it previously, but I just couldn’t help posting about it again since the premiere night already has a definite date and that it will be shown really soon! The Thank You Girls will have its premiere night on August 28, 2008 at the UP Cine Adarna (formerly UP Film Center), UP Diliman at 6:30 PM.

The Thank You Girls, written and directed by Charliebebs Gohetia (writer of the hit Daybreak), is about beauconeras (beauty contestant veterans) from Davao City who got tired of losing beauty competitions there.  These queens of the backstage decide to travel to Cagayan de Oro City in hopes of conquering the grandest competition of beauty, personality and brains in the province. (Trailer after the jump)

The movie uses Bisaya/Cebuano as its primary language combined with variations of gay lingo! (For those of you who are not aware, gay lingo/swardspeak also differs from one are of the Philippines to another). Of course there are subtitles, but with or without them, this film still promises to be one heck of a laugh trip as it also introduces very catchy and witty lines, in English and in local swardspeak. Take these lines from the trailer as an example: » Read more: The Thank You Girls Premieres Soon!

Mariah-less Touch My Body Video

July 14th, 2008
“Touch My Body” coverImage via Wikipedia

Many gay guys love and adore Mariah Carey.  I’m not one of them.  I’m one of the few gay guys I know who are not sold on Mariah’s (and Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez’s) diva greatness but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate their music. But I’d have to admit that I kind of despise some of their songs and videos.

So it was with great pleasure and excitement when I saw this video on YouTube. It’s Mariah Carey’s Touch My Body sans Mariah Carey.  No Mariah anywhere at all!  Yipee!

Fun right? But of course we won’t leave out big Mariah fans out there! There’s another version of this Green-screen video that only has Mariah.  Everything else was grren-screened out (and the audio of that geeky dude was also turned off).  Nice eh?  See it after the jump.

Enjoy!
