Jansport and Individuality

This Way to Individuality

If faced with a fork in the road – one paved with wing tips, long hours and paperwork, while the other with music, tattoos and flowers – which path would you choose?

With JanSport’s success as an international business and cultural phenomenon, it knows all too well which road to follow. The once small hippie store in Seattle, has now evolved into a multimillion dollar company that sells several million bags a year.

Now after 40 years, JanSport continues to celebrate its hippie heritage with its Graphic Remix line of bags inspired by this generation’s most definitive counterculture which is the Indie community. The Graphic Remix line’s quirky and anti-conformist designs like graffiti, doodles, pop art and calligraphy fits the Indie community’s passion for creativity, originality and individuality.

“For us a bag is more than just for carrying your stuff around, but as a practical and personal billboard of expression that’s why we came up with the concept of the Graphic Remix line individually designed by the country’s best graphic designers,” says Clytie Choa, Brand Manager for Jansport.

To further emphasize the overwhelming talent and creativity of this unique sub-culture, JanSport takes you on an awesome trip down the Indie trail with Music, Tats and Flowers at the Mag:net Cafe that features performances from underground sensations Pamilia Dimagiba and Bagetsafonik as well as a rare DJ Battle between DJ Arbie Won and DJ Supreme Fist.

While graphics enthusiasts will have a field day watching the country’s best street art crews We Will Doodle, Pilipinas Street Plan, and Samahang Batang Aerosol take art out of the confines of an art gallery with impromptu graffiti, sketches and doodles. And for those tech savvy artists that have a computer for a canvass and a keyboard for a brush, animator Myx Escudero is about to change every pixel of your world.

But if you really want to go against the flow, then make your body the canvass and get inked by professional tattoo artists from the Philippine Tattoo Artists Guild (PhilTag) lead by its president, Ricky Sta. Ana.

“Having come from a subculture as well, JanSport understands the importance of recognizing and nurturing an emerging cultural phenomenon like the Indie community with products like the Graphic Remix bags and events like Music, Tats and Flowers that address the specific needs and lifestyle of this niche community,” says Clytie.
